Recycling a Waste of Time?

  We do this to avoid throwing them in the bin which then ends up in the landfill sites around the country. But how useful is recycling and can it really solve the waste crisis?
UK households generate a staggering thirty million tonnes of rubbish a year, of which sixty per cent comes from packaging. There has been a lot of publicity recently about waste that has been put out for recycling ending up in landfill sites. It is also clear that an increasing amount is being shipped to other countries to dispose of. It can be cheaper to transport it to other countries than to recycle it or fill up the landfill sites in the UK.
The European Union (EU) has recently ordered the citizens of the United Kingdom to roughly double their recycling rates by 2008. Governments across the European Union and America have announced plans to require more recycling. Unless the UK hits these targets, local council tax bills across the UK will soar unless local authorities hit their recycling targets to enable the UK to hit their targets set by the EU. The UK government already charges tax for dumping waste in landfill sites to encourage us to recycle more and this tax is due to increase.
This will punish local councils which continue to use landfills and council tax payers will pay the price for poor performance by not recycling themselves or by not having the facilities to do this. It’s therefore cheaper to recycle then to dump in the landfill sites. The UK currently recycles 22 per cent of its household waste while some other EU countries recycle more than half. The UK proposes cutting the amount of waste put into landfill sites from 72 per cent today to 25 per cent by 2020.
Some Thing to Think About -The Future?
- Why do we use all that energy recycling paper to save the trees? There is the argument that paper should be recycled so that we save trees and forests but we now grow trees just to produce newsprint and other items. Is it a sustainable resource already?
- New landfills are constructed in the USA and this should happen in the UK on a large scale which would enable the UK to pipe the methane gas that they produce to local power plants supplying homes in a green and eco way.
- We need to ensure that any recycling programmes that are run are delivered effectively. That means tracing waste down the chain to its ultimate destination. Transparency should inform the whole waste management industry.
- If a study in undertaken and it concludes that it costs more to recycle than to bury the used and manufacture the new from scratch, then we could start landfills just for plastic, one for glass etc. then if we do run out of them we can dig them all up in one go for recycling. For example, if the throwing away of plastic continues and continuing oil shortages mean that it is more cost effective we can recycle them all at once by mining the landfills and it would be cheaper and easier then continuous recycling.
- At present, only an estimated fifteen per cent of UK households have access to kerbside collections, if they these collections do not cover glass, paper, plastic etc. then how far do you have to drive to the nearest recycling centre and how much do you have to collect at home to ensure that you are not making more damage by driving then the amount of energy you are saving by recycling? What about the financial cost to collect the recycling or to take it to the recycling centre? What about the energy taken to recycle it? Is oil really running out? How much landfill is available?

  Whether you are in the local market or a supermarket, it says South African apples, Israeli pears and peppers from Chile. You would think that the UK and USA does not produce any food, if this is the case then where has the billions of pounds gone that our two governments pay in farmers subsidies?
By buying food from abroad, developing countries get to market their produce world-wide and we get out of season food all year round. Everyones happy except the environment. Food transportation across the globe is making a significant contribution to climate change. Just look at the following examples:
Food in the UK travels 65% further than it did two decades ago
Heinz ketchup eaten in California is made with California-grown tomatoes shipped to Canada for processing and returned in bottles
In one year, the port of New York City exported $431,000 of Californian almonds to Italy, and imported $397,000 of Italian almonds to the US

What is local food and how can it help?
For many, local food is interpreted as unprocessed food, to be transformed by the consumer or a local shop rather than by the food industry. The food originates from as close to home as possible such as on a regional or national level. As such, local food reduces or eliminates the costs of transport, processing, packaging, and advertising. The go local food movement is currently flourishing with over 15% of people buying food locally and this number continues to rise as the number of farmers markets and local vegetable box schemes increases.
The benefit of locally grown fresh food is that it can be consumed almost immediately after production leading to an increase in food quality and taste as it may be sold fresher and usually riper. Also, the need for chemical preservatives to artificially extend the shelf-life can be reduced or eliminated.
Buying local food does not necessarily mean giving up all food coming from distant countries, but rather favoring local foods when available. Why buy apples from South Africa when you can buy British apples? But often buying food produced abroad can be cheaper (yes, cheaper) than locally produced food due to the subsidies the farmers receive and  economies of scale from these large plantations.
It is also argued that national borders should preferably not be used to define what is local and instead measurements made in miles. The growth of Sat Nav systems maybe able to help in calculating the exact number of food miles that food has undertaken. For people living in, say, the south of England, food produced in northern France is more local than food produced in Scotland as it is closer. The local food movement in the European Union has been furhter complicated and hindered by EU rules requiring items produced in the EU, including food, to be marked as products of the EU, rather than as products of any particular country. The instinct of customers to buy nationally produced food in the name of patriotism was deemed to be a barrier to free trade and anti EU.
Studies need to be undertaken so that people can have faith and knowledge that the food that they are buying is actually reducing their carbon footprint on the earth. For example, we need to assess whether it is likely to be more environmentally friendly for tomatoes to be grown in the hot climate of Spain and transported to the UK than for the same tomatoes to be grown in greenhouses in the UK requiring huge amounts of electricity to light and heat them.

  Prevent global warming by minimizing drafts in your home.
One of the simplest and easiest ways to prevent global warming is to make sure all your windows and doors are draft free. Small gaps in your windows and doors can cause you to consume a lot more energy than you really need to in order to heat and cool your home. To make your home free from drafts wait until a cold day, then hold your hand along the edges of your doors and windows feeling for cold air.  If you detect drafts, buy weather stripping from your local hardware store and install it wherever it is needed.
  Prevent global warming by reducing your waste electricity use.
Amazingly about 11% of residential electricity consumption is used by "phantom loads." A phantom load is caused when an electrical appliance draws electricity when it isn't in use. For example, a DVD player has an electrically lighted display that stays on even when you turn the power off. An easy way to eliminate these phantom loads is to plug your computers, printers, scanners, DVD players, televisions, etc. into multi-plug electrical surge protectors. Then, with one flick of the switch, you can make sure that the appliances plugged into your surge protectors are drawing no electricity at all.
  Prevent global warming with more efficient light bulbs!
One of the simplest ways to prevent global warming is by using more efficient light bulbs. The Union of Concerned Scientists tell us that if every American household replaced just one incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent one, then over the life of the bulbs 90 billion pounds of CO2 emission would be prevented from going into the atmosphere. This is like taking 6.3 million cars off the road!
  Prevent global warming by turning down your hot water heater.
Most of us have our hot water heaters turned up too high. If you turn down your hot water thermostat just 10 degrees Fahrenheit, you reduce 3% to 5% of your energy consumption. You'll have plenty of hot water if you set your water heater between 110-120°F.
These four simple ways to prevent global warming can be implemented quickly, easily, and with little to no expense.
If the potential effects of global warming are really scary to you, then you should implement these changes in your life today, but don't stop there!
Once you've implemented these solutions, share this article with your friends, and explain to your friends how you've made these simple changes. Be sure to offer your friends help and support in making these changes themselves to make it extra easy for them to prevent global warming with you.

 In October 2006, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) released its annual ‘Living Planet Report’ - detailing the global impact on natural resources and the declining numbers of animal species that are dependent upon them. It also offered solutions on how to reverse the downward trends in these areas. This year's report also explores the impact of human activity on the planet and concludes that the world's natural ecosystems are being run down at a rate never seen before in human history.
The ‘Living Planet Report’ makes the terrifying inference that the world's population of vertebrate species have declined by a third since 1970, thus confirming the worst of human fears: that humanity is using up the planet's resources at a much faster rate than which they can be produced. Carter S. Roberts, President and CEO of the WWF, commented:
"The bottom line of this report could not be more clear - for twenty years we've lived our lives in a way that far exceeds the carrying capacity of the Earth. The choices we make today will shape the possibilities for the generations which follow us. The fact that we live beyond our means in our use of natural resources will surely limit opportunities for future generations to follow."
In fact, the USA, as the world's foremost consumer society, is seen to be at the forefront of what the WWF report calls ‘resource overshoot’ - the use of more resources than is sustainable by the planet. This makes it all the more important for institutions in the USA - including the government, parents and teachers - to teach our children (the "future generations" that Roberts talks about) with such concern of exactly how harmful human behaviour can be to the planet.
In an attempt to try to educate children, there has, to date been a variety of efforts made by different sources on how best to preserve the environment for future life. For example, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) runs a children's educational resource called TUNZA, which aims to work in partnership with children across the world in order to equip them with the tools needed to maintain the environment for their own children in turn.
With environmental and wildlife awareness having become so much more prevalent in popular culture during the last ten years - through sources as wide ranging as The Body Shop's 1990s product packaging, through to Al Gore's recent movie ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ - many larger organisations that are not traditionally associated with education have jumped on board. For instance, Doubletree hotels runs a program called ‘Teaching Kids to CARE®’ - a special educational initiative that aims to bring wildlife and environmental awareness to the forefront of the classroom.

Green Plus

  Green Plus demonstrates the ability to reduce toxics and gaseous emissions

Biofriendly Corporation announced the results of tests conducted by Petroecuador, the national oil company of Ecuador. The tests were designed to evaluate the effectiveness of Green plus TM in reducing major combustion gas emissions in diesel engines. The Research Technology Development Unit of Petroecuador supervised the tests, with the participation of Chemeng, a government approved testing organization.

The Petroecuador report concluded that Green Plus TM demonstrated an ability to significantly reduce the four major toxic and gaseous emissions of diesel fuel combustion that can lead to serious health problems and climate-changing effects.

The tests were conducted on diesel buses as well as stationary engines utilizing certified test equipment. The results of the stationary engines showed Carbon Monoxide (CO) emissions dropped by an average of 52.27%, Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions decreased by an average of 43.57%, and Sulfur Dioxide (SOx) emissions decreased by an average of 50.06%. On the mobile source bus engines, "The opacity of the smoke produced in the emissions of the two buses was reduced by levels of more than 90% in periods of five to fifteen days," according to Petroecuador, Carbon Monoxide was reduced by an average of 54.98%, Nitrogen Oxides reduced by 53 %, and Sulfur Dioxide by 4.66%. 

According to the report, there is an "Urgent need to improve air quality" in Ecuador.  Immediate and long-term reductions of respiratory diseases; decreases in the number of vehicles that emit large quantities of smoke; cleaner engines, buildings and cities; more tourism as a result of better air quality; and improved efficiency - are all potential benefits of using the Green Plus TM fuel catalyst.

Under development for over 10 years, Green Plus TM is a new product that employs nanotechnology (working at the molecular level) to achieve a breakthrough combination of improved fuel economy and reduced emissions. Green Plus TM is a liquid combustion catalyst that is added in very small quantities to fuel in order to create a more complete, cooler and more linear burn. The product has undergone rigorous testing in the United States and Europe, and has over 75 million miles of on-road/on-ocean use. Sludge

  Don't Slander the Sludge - Making Good Use of Bad Sludge

Sewage sludge.  The mere thought almost puts you off your lunch, doesn't it?  Ah, but convert it to biosolids, and that's another story!  Biosolids are the nutrient-rich organic materials that are left over after the disposed sludge is processed and treated.  Biosolids contain nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium (the same ingredients found in chemical fertilizers) as well as magnesium, manganese, iron, zinc and calcium, all of which are desirable components for farmland.
In days gone by, municipalities would deal with their raw sewage by dumping it into a nearby river or lake.  Truth be known, this practice still occurs in many areas.  More and more municipalities, however, are now required to treat their wastewater, and dispose of the treated byproduct either through recycling it as fertilizer, incinerating it, or burying it in a landfill.
Applied to farmland, biosolids serve many beneficial purposes.  The application of biosolids replenishes organic matter which is depleted during the crop cycle, reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, improves crop growth and yields, and reduces production costs of the farmer's crop.  Biosolid application improves soil structure, reduces erosion and runoff, and increases the soil's capacity to hold water.
The Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs established guidelines to monitor and control the utilization of biosolids in Ontario that governs the actions of biosolids producers, haulers, and users.  Producers must obtain approval of their material before it can be spread on agricultural land.  The specific site must be approved and granted a Certificate of Approval.  The materials must be shown to be of benefit to crop production or soil health, and not to degrade the natural environment.
Much of the onus is on the treated sewage sludge hauler to meet the guidelines.  The hauler and applicator, or biosolids management company, must spread the sewage biosolids at the correct and approved rate, and must comply with separation distances from watercourses, groundwater, bedrock, residences and water wells. Done properly and with due care, recycling biosolids is an excellent use of sewage sludge.
